What is BMI?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a person's weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. It's an inexpensive and easy screening method for weight category—underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity.
Is BMI an accurate measure of health?
BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations. It doesn't directly measure body fat or account for muscle mass, bone density, overall body composition, and racial/sex differences. It should be used as one indicator among others for health assessment.
What are the BMI categories?
Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
Normal weight: BMI 18.5 to 24.9
Overweight: BMI 25 to 29.9
Obesity: BMI 30 or greater
How often should I check my BMI?
For most adults, checking BMI once every 3-6 months is sufficient unless you're actively trying to change your weight. Significant weight changes (gain or loss of 5% of body weight) warrant more frequent monitoring.
